Course Overview

An interprofessional collaborative leadership program brought to you by the UPMC Office of Advanced Practice Providers and the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences that serves as an introductory course to leadership as an APP. This program is unique in its inclusivity and collaboration with the following disciplines: Certified Nurse Midwifery, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia, Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner. You will learn pathways beyond clinical leadership for professional development including key skill development and how to become a more effective leader in your organization with this 16-week course. You will emerge with key personal and leadership strategies that will prepare you to successfully continue on your path of professional development.

  • Please note, the welcome module will open on August 12th where we invite you to introduce yourself to the class, complete the pre-course surveys, and get oriented with the technology.
  • Online Registation will open 7/7/22
  • Cost: $1,100
  • In an effort to diversify the course participants, be inclusive of all APP professions, and promote interdisciplinary discussions among the various professions, we need limit the number of participants from each profession in a given course.  As of May 2, 2022, we have the maximum number of CRNAs acceptable to provide an optimal participant experience in the course beginning in August 2022, so if you are a CRNA we are happy to reserve a seat for you in the course that begins in February 2023.  If you wish to reserve this seat, please email farkasdr@pitt.edu.  Thank you for your understanding!

Program Goals

  • Introduce Advanced Practice Provider Leadership (APP) Pathways
  • Provide tools for the provider to navigate the transition into APP Leadership
  • Discuss communication strategies and how to develop an executive presence
  • Provide insight to the dynamics of a healthcare system and emerging as an effective leader

Program Components

This program is designed with flexibility for the demanding schedule of an active clinician and designed in a virtual format. The program is organized into 8 bi-weekly online modules. It is self-paced learning with realistic deadlines. Each module will have a pre-recorded video component that is broken down into manageable segments allowing the clinician to watch as they are able. Meaningful interactions and network opportunities with colleagues, educational staff and leadership experts are built in throughout the course to enhance the experience. Curriculum includes eight interactive modules over a 16-week schedule designed to fit into the work-life balance of a busy clinician. 

Participant Expectations

To complete the program successfully, participants are expected to fulfill the following:

  • Complete all program self-assessments (pre/post evaluations) and session evaluations
  • Participate in the online components of the course
  • Meet outlined deadlines in the course schedule

At the Conclusion of the Course

Certificate of Completion is granted from the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Tuition Scholarship

As leaders of this course, we recognize that every individual has their own “distance traveled,” which represents lived experience, including the barriers and challenges they have overcome to reach their personal and professional goals. 

"Distance traveled” is unique to each individual and often includes circumstances we are born into or that occur early in our lives that continue to affect us as adult professionals.  

One major factor in “distance traveled” is intergenerational mobility: A person’s ability to access opportunities to obtain a high-quality education and their career, income and wealth goals are directly influenced by their family or foster care upbringing (including such factors as parental income, culture, thoughts/beliefs and others) and demographics (race, class and gender). 

Additionally, individuals of minoritized gender identities, sexual orientations, ability/disability statuses, national origins, and other identities, backgrounds and experiences often face significant disadvantages as they pursue their goals.

Through this scholarship, we are using the privilege of financial resources to ease the path to leadership for as many of our colleagues as we can. We ask anyone registering in this course to consider applying for this scholarship, but keep in mind your current resource s  and only apply if you are in need of financial assistance with this course.

How to Apply for the APP Tuition Scholarship Using 500 words or less, inform us how your “distance traveled” has contributed to where you are today–and how the APP Leadership course will help propel you to reach your next goals.

Email your submission as an attached Word document to APPLeadershipCourse@pitt.edu by the end of the day on July 1, 2022. Two scholarships for the full course tuition will be offered for the course that begins in August 2022.
